Her debut appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup took place in 2011. She played a key role in guiding her team U.S. Women's World Cup team to two consecutive wins in 2015. The team was awarded cocaptain status in the year 2018. Two goals by Rapinoe's were a in a 4-3-2 United States victory against Australia during the Olympics of 2020 in Tokyo. Japan, however it was postponed until 2021 until the COVID-19 pandemic had passed.
